Context

The project “Voices of Recovery” has been developed in the provinces of Satipo and Chanchamayo, in the central region of the Amazon.

We built an alliance with two indigenous organizations in two areas of the central jungle:

  1. The Asháninka Central of the Ene River (CARE), which brings together 18 native communities in the Ene River valley.

  2. The Organization of Asháninka Indigenous Women of the Central Forest (OMIAASEC), the regional base of the National Organization of Andean and Amazonian Indigenous Women of Peru (ONAMIAP), works with communities in the Perené River Valley.

With both organizations, we identified the core risks and vulnerabilities facing indigenous communities, primarily the Asháninka, as well as the latent conflicts and threats that worsened during the pandemic and were exacerbated by the political crisis.

At the same time, we work directly with two communities in two areas of the central jungle:

  • In the Perené River Valley, work has been carried out in the native communities of Shankivironi and San Jerónimo.

  • In the Ene River Valley, work has been carried out with the Potsoteni native community.

In Peru, the project is funded by Canada's International Development Research Centre (IDRC).
