We carried out the project in the provinces of Satipo and Chanchamayo, in the central Amazon region.

We built an alliance with two indigenous organisations in the central jungle.

 1. The Asháninka Central of the Ene River (CARE) brings together native communities in the upper and lower parts of the Ene.

2. The Asháninka Indigenous Women's Organisation of Central Jungle (OMIAASEC), which is part of CECONCEC - Central of Native Communities of the Central Jungle, brings together Asháninka and Yanesha native communities in the Perené and Satipo river areas.

Work is being carried out in three native communities, which are:

  • the native communities of Shankivironi and San Jerónimo in the Perené river valley and

  • the native Potsoteni community in the Ene river valley.

The native community of Shankivironi

The Shankivironi native community is located in the Pichanaki district, Chanchamayo province, Junín region. It was officially recognised as a native community between 1975 and 1976, following an organisational process led by Asháninka families living in the area. It currently covers approximately 2470 hectares, organised into five sectors.

Its legal recognition was granted within the framework of the land titling process promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, which allowed for the establishment of its communal boundaries and the formalisation of its organisational structure through a board of directors.

The native community of San Jerónimo is located in the Perené district, Chanchamayo province, Junín region, on the outskirts of the population centre of Puerto Yurinaki. It was founded around 1946 by Asháninka families from the Gran Pajonal, and legally recognised as a native community in 1979. Originally known as the Quinchocre reserve, it was officially registered as San Jerónimo-Puerto Yurinaki. Its land titling process took place within the framework of the Native Communities Law (1974) and allowed the consolidation of a communal structure with formal registration and its own representation.

The Potsoteni native community

Potsoteni is a native community located in the lower part of the Ene river valley, Mazamari district, Satipo province. Its population is mainly Asháninka and is distributed between a central village (Potsoteni) and an annex (Alto Tabecharo). The community has titled lands whose sale or rental is prohibited, as well as the establishment of settler populations in the community. Its economy is based on subsistence farming, supplemented to a lesser extent by the production of cocoa, citrus and coffee. Currently, no extractive activities are carried out in the territory, with the aim of protecting its forest resources and conserving its forests.
